Journals

The following new titles were published in September and October:

Several years ago, ACM created their online resource called ACM Digital Library.  We became immediate subscribers.  At that time, one of their journal titles, Computing Reviews, broke off and became their own online service.  We have finally added this resource to our offerings.  Designed to provide an up-to-date overview of the field, this is a resource for both specialists and generalists.

It has become a community of over 1,000 reviewers, who are all experts in their fields.  They provide timely commentaries and authoritative critiques, helping readers find the best new books and articles in computing.   New reviews are published daily, and the resource provides searching, browsing, and alerting functions, enabling readers to survey the computing literature as a whole or pinpoint a particular item.

In 2004, Computing Reviews added Hot Topics essays to its site. Each essay is written by an expert and focuses on an area with a potential high impact on computing.  Mapping the background, current developments, and future evolution of a topic, the essays also provide a comprehensive context with links to labs, projects, workshops, and relevant items reviewed in Computing Reviews.  All Hot Topics essays are updated on a regular basis.

So check out Computing Reviews at:  http://reviews.com

Here are some highlights of new articles in IEEE journals:

IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, November 2008
Highlights include an evaluation of telemedicine-based services, recursive fuzzy granulation for gene subsets extraction and cancer classification, detecting differences between contrast groups, image diffusion using saliency bilateral filter, and detections of arterial wall in sonographic artery images using dual dynamic programming.

IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, November 2008
Contains articles on injection-locked fractional frequency dividers, SiGe receiver front ends for millimeter-wave passive imaging, stability and passivity enforcement of parametric macromodels, and mixed quantum-classical methods for molecular simulations of biochemical reactions.

IEEE Aerospace and Electronics Magazine, October 2008
Features a special tribute to NASA’s 50th Anniversary with articles on the first rocket launch from Cape Canaveral, post-WWII technology, the Apollo computing evolution, unmanned satellites, and satellite communications.

IEEE has approved six new journals to be released in 2009.  The list of new titles covers an array of information on emerging and multidisciplinary topics:

  • IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development
  • IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI in Games
  • IEEE Embedded Systems Letters
  • IEEE Journal of Optical Communications and Networking
  • IEEE Photonics Journal
  • IEEE Solid State Circuits Magazine

Other IEEE news information is available in their newsletter:  What’s New @ IEEE.

Scitopia.org is a free federated search portal to the digital libraries of 21 societies spanning 350 years of scholarship, including over 3.5 million documents, patents, and government data. Some of the indexed societies of interest to the ECE and CS communities are:

  • American Institute of Physics (AIP)
  • Audio Engineering Society
  • The Electrochemical Society
  • Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
  • Institute of Physics (IoP)
  • Optical Society of America (OSA)
  • Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM)
  • Society for Information Display (SID)
  • Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Scifinder Scholar now has a web version available. In the past, you were required to download the program to your computer–that’s no longer required.

SciFinder is an interface to scientific information from Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). SciFinder allows you to search millions of chemical references and substances. You can search by research topic, author name, structure and substructure, chemical name or CAS Registry Number, company/name organization, browse the table of contents in journals, and by reaction query.
